Release Agents for Decorative Laminates by Durafine

The Durafine Advantage

Durafine Coatings is a “full service” manufacturer of water-borne industrial coatings and release agents. We also custom-manufacture to your requirements, including color matching.

HARDENER : 340/341 SERIES

  • Latent hardener for Melamine-formaldehyde, Urea-formaldehyde impregnation resins with long pot-life and high curing activity.
  • CA-340 does not contain chloride ions.

WETTING AGENT : WT-320

  • Wetting agent for Melamine-formaldehyde, Urea formaldehyde resins and impregnation of decor papers which are difficult to process.
  • Effectively reduces the surface tension of the resin allowing for better penetration in the paper.

RELEASE AGENT : RA-330

Special internal release agent that can be added directly to any aqueous resin system (Melamine, Phenolic or Urea aqueous resin mixture), Used for high pressure and low pressure impregnation.

ANTIBLOCK AGENT : AB-310 SERIES

  • Well suited for the decorative coating of plane carrier materials (e.g. chip boards, fiber boards, sheets on bases of phenolic resins a.s.o.).
  • The impregnated decorative papers can be used in the short cycle process as well as in the continuous production of high-pressure laminates Also usable for post forming systems.

GLOSS AGENT : GP-355 SERIES

  • Additive allows to achieve a higher gloss level and better flow properties of the resin.
  • Ideal additive for melamine-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde resins and impregnation of decor papers which are difficult to process.
  • Effectively reduces the surface tension of the resin allowing for better penetration in the paper and will give a higher flexibility.

MODIFIER : MF-358 SERIES

  • MF-358 is a waterbased modifier which is based on a combination of Acrylat Resin, Glycols and Amines.
  • Reacts well with melamine-formaldehyde resins and combinations of melamine-formaldehyde resins with urea-formaldehyde resins.
  • MF-353 is especially suitable for resins which are used for HP-, CPL- and Contilam-process.

DEFOAMER : AF-707 SERIES07

Water based defoamer which shows excellent results at low dosage. Does not contain alcohols or silicones.

Customer Benefits
The customer reported:

  • Improved laminate surface quality with consistent resin distribution
  • Reduced downtime due to less press cleaning and rework
  • Lower chemical consumption through targeted dosing
  • Fewer rejects boosting first-pass yield and cost efficiency
  • Strengthened technical collaboration, resulting in a long-term supply partnership

Conclusion Durafine's tailored additive solution delivered process optimization and quality improvements far beyond what standard products could achieve. By customizing wetting agents, anti-foams, and release aids, the customer was able to increase output, reduce waste, and enhance laminate appearance—a significant competitive edge in the decorative surfaces market.

Durafine Case Study

Custom Additive Solutions Improve Impregnation Quality for Decorative Laminates

A major manufacturer of decorative laminates was experiencing quality and consistency issues during the paper impregnation stage of production. The company processes melamine- and phenol-based resins into decorative papers used for high-pressure laminates (HPL) and compact laminates for furniture, wall panels, and flooring. Despite using standard additives, the operation faced several persistent challenges that impacted yield and surface quality.

The Problem
The customer reported:

  • Inconsistent wetting of décor and kraft paper, especially at high-speed lines
  • Foaming issues leading to resin overflow and uneven resin distribution
  • Release defects during hot press lamination (e.g., sticking and surface blemishes)
  • Increased waste and machine downtime due to paper rejects and roll contamination
These issues negatively affected production efficiency, final product aesthetics, and cost of quality.

Durafine's Approach
Rather than recommending off-the-shelf products, Durafine undertook a process-level technical study. This involved:

  • On-site evaluation of resin viscosity, impregnation speed, dryer conditions, and paper types
  • Sampling and testing under simulated production conditions
  • Collaborative discussions with the technical team to identify root causes
  • Tailoring a custom additive package including:
    • High-efficiency wetting agent for uniform resin penetration
    • Anti-foam additive compatible with fast-curing resins
    • Optimized release agent for clean separation during hot pressing
